The River Reporter: I see dead people

In the interest of full disclosure: I do not see dead people. And to be clear, I don’t believe that Theresa Caputo “sees” dead people either, but I’m pretty sure that she can sense spirits around her, hear them delivering messages to loved ones and be in tune with the dearly departed on a psychic plane that I can’t even pretend to understand.

A few months ago, I’d read online that the world-famous psychic medium was scheduled to make an appearance on Friday, June 12 at Resorts World Catskills in Sullivan County. I contacted the casino, hoping for a chance to see Caputo in action. After being directed to reach out to her team, I was happily granted an opportunity to schedule a short tête-à-tête with Caputo via Zoom as part of the press junket promoting her tour, “Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience.”

Visions of a young Haley Joel Osment uttering that now-famous line (“I see dead people”) flooded my thoughts as I recalled the central character in M. Night Shyamalan’s 1999 supernatural thriller, “The Sixth Sense” as he informed a child psychologist (Bruce Willis) of his special abilities.

Prior to sitting down to chat with Caputo, I was assured that “Theresa does not give readings during interviews,” and while I might have been secretly hoping that would spontaneously occur, I resigned myself to that not being the case. Having scribbled a few notes in anticipation of our one-on-one, I logged online and was greeted by a smiling Caputo, who was instantly warm, charming and (IMHO) surprisingly down to earth.

JCF: Word on the street is that your upcoming appearance is the talk of the town.

TC: I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been to Monticello before, but I’ve never done a live show there, and I’m honored and super excited to be coming to Resorts World Catskills.

JCF: I’ve seen you doing psychic readings on television. But it’s hard to tell whether you can turn it on or off, since you’re sometimes inspired to approach people when you’re just, you know, out in the world, living your best life.

TC: I really can’t, because I’m always sensing and feeling things. And that’s the great thing about coming to a live show, as you will see that happening right in front of you. And the other thing is, I am not on the stage the whole night. I come out, do a little quick speech, and then once I start feeling pulled around the theatre, I’ll be randomly stopping in front of people and giving them life-changing messages.

JCF: I’m curious. Has the way you receive information changed or evolved over the years since you first began understanding how it all works?

TC: Honestly, Jonathan, I don’t know how this works… it just happens. And yes, my ability, the way I channel and receive messages has evolved. I’ve been doing this a very long time.

[I’m not sure if it was coincidental, but Caputo seemed to know in advance what I was going to ask next and launched into the answer before I could posit the question, which had to do with handling personal issues of those she’s reading with delicacy.]

TC: One of the ways that things have changed is that sometimes there are extremely sensitive subjects, like how someone passes, and while I will never filter a message, I have to find a way to deliver it with dignity and grace.

[Glancing at my notes, I wondered aloud whether doing so is emotionally or physically draining for her, particularly after a session that involves sharing such personal messages.]

TC: It is, but you also have to realize that I know that I was born this way. When you come to the live show, you’ll hear about how I communicate, how spirit communicates through me, and what people can expect.

When a soul contacts me, they make me feel an emotional bond, and how they knew someone here. Then they physically bring me through their departure, so I actually feel what they felt when they left the physical body. You have to understand—I don’t have any personal thoughts, feelings or emotions when I read, because I have to be strong when I deliver these messages. But you will see that sometimes I do become emotional because spirit just hits a spot in my soul. It is hard, but I know that I was born to do this work.

JCF: When you’re doing a group reading, and there are so many people around you, doesn’t it create a lot of noise in your head? How do you deal with that?

TC: Yes, it is a lot, but as I said, I don’t know how this works—it just happens. It’s like something changes within me and I go into this mode, super focused on where I need to be. And sometimes when I’m stopped in front of a person, they look like a deer in the headlights because it takes them a few moments to realize that I’m talking about them—even though there are others [in the crowd] shouting that they think I’m referring to them.

You know, this has nothing to do with me. I do what I do because I know that this is my soul’s journey here in the physical world. I have no control over what happens, but I can guarantee you that the souls that speak to me are those that can deliver messages. And that’s why the experience is so powerful. I believe that I’m good at this because I just say what they make me feel. I don’t even understand some of the things that they have me say, but I don’t care. As long as the person that spirit is speaking to understands it.

The most amazing thing that takes place during a live experience is that souls come through and validate that these messages truly are for the person I’m drawn to because they’re [referencing] things that nobody else would know about. Things that happened years ago, things that happened after they died, or things that have never been shared with anyone else, often channeled with levity and love. And that’s what I find amazing.

JCF: Well, I find it all amazing. Over the years, I’ve had a few woo-woo experiences, but after the fact I always find a way to dismiss it as my imagination playing tricks on me. How do I give myself over to believing otherwise?

TC: That’s natural, but this is what I say. We all have the ability to connect with our loved ones. We have a soul bond that can never and will never be broken. You might smell something for no discernible reason, you might hear a song on the radio, or you might see things that remind you of them out of nowhere. Know that that is their soul reaching out to you and reminding you that they are with you at that exact moment. Know that they haven’t left you spiritually. Remind yourself that you know it was real and even though it doesn’t happen every day, it was a little “hello” from heaven.
